Identifying the most successful football team, or the most popular policy option, can be done in a number of ways. Three methodologies are here compared: (a) a knock-out competition like the FA cup, which is similar to a whole series of majority votes; (b) a league competition like the Premier League, where every team plays every other team, or where the popularity of every option is compared with that of every other option, as in a Condorcet count; and (c) a competition based on goal difference, the number of goals scored compared to the number conceded, which is similar to a Modified Borda Count, i.e., the number of points each option gains.
The 2012-13 football championship was a classic example of where bothe the League and the teams' goal differences, both the Condorcet and the MBC, give an accuate assessment of the teams' abilities, whereas the FA Cup produces an anomaly, as would many majority vote procedure. Here is the analysis.
